Castle of Vaux-le-Vicomte
The Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte was built in the 17th century by architect Louis Le Vau, painter Charles Le Brun, and landscape gardener André Le Nôtre. It was constructed for Nicolas Fouquet, the Superintendent of Finances for Louis XIV at the time. The construction of the castle was completed in 1661, and it is considered one of the finest examples of French classical architecture.

The history of the museum's creation

After the downfall of Nicolas Fouquet in 1661, the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte was confiscated by King Louis XIV. Later, the castle was acquired by the de Vogüé family in 1875, who undertook extensive restoration work to preserve its historical heritage. Today, the castle is still owned by the de Vogüé family and is open to the public as a museum.
